Subject: E2- Meaning of e2 Names

We have been in discussion of True's name and I remembered something that I had read a while back in and E2 newsletter that came out on AOL. This is a list of the meaning of the characters names according to someone on AOL. It doesnt answer what True's name is short for, if anything, but it is still very interesting.

-Kim

True Danziger: John's daughter. The meaning of her name is obvious. She is loyal, sincere, faithful, and perhaps because of her age, symbolizes the kind of innocence and naivete that the group exhibits on its first trek through a new world... uncertain, learning as they go.

John Danziger: "John" is the name of many kings. It is also a book of the New Testament, but I think it safe to disregard any religious connotations. John is portrayed as a man with strength of character. A leader, John scouts new trails, repairs the equipment and helps eliminate obstacles. Even back on the stations, his job was to help prepare the ship for its voyage. He is a symbol of one who "paves the way" to New Pacifica and makes it possible for the others to find a better life than the one they left behind.

Devon Adair: Devon comes from the name of southwest England, Devonshire. Devonshire is home to many seaports from which the lifeblood of England flows through its shipping trade. Like those ships carrying the needs of England, she is the lifeblood of the group. She is the reason for their expedition. It was Devon who led the effort to bring the sick children of the stations to a new world where they could find health and vitality in a clean environment. Devon is a leader. She can be likened to the captain of a ship at sea who has the awesome responsibility to see that his passengers reach port safely. So too is Devon dedicated to bringing her group safely to New Pacifica.

Bess and Morgan Martin: a martin is a bird. Actually, it's a member of the swallow family. Like the flightiness of two birds, Bess and Morgan are unpredictable. They provide an occasional side trip into danger. Like little birds, they tend to think of themselves first and seem to be happiest feathering their own nest. Yet like little birds, they're necessary in the total scheme of things and seem to symbolize that random element of unpredicability and uncertainty which would characterize a new world.

Dr. Julia Heller: Julia was the name of the daughter of Caesar Augustus who was notorious for her self-indulgence and vice. That would appear to be inconsistent with the character of a doctor, but let's not forget that it was Julia who secretly kept in contact with those who were seeking to exploit the Terrians, through little Uly, for their own benefit! Dr. Heller would seem to represent that force which causes a loss of innocence by betrayal. Though she seems to have reprieved herself for this season, we have yet to see what next year will bring!

Alonzo Solace: solace is defined as consolation; comfort in sorrow. There is an element of comfort in Alonzo's character. He is the dream-link to the Terrians. He seems to be adverse to the character of Dr. Heller in that he is able to utilize the Terrians to aid the group. He is an interpreter for a race that cannot vocalize its needs or objections to the new explorers and pioneers of Earth 2. He is the personification of the link between humans and their natural environment. He makes us aware of how easily the earth can be damaged.

Yale: the teacher; the source of knowledge. Named after that prestigious university, Yale tutors the children of Earth 2. But Yale is also a source of knowledge for Devon, Danziger and the others. He is the actual and symbolic link back to the forgotten knowledge of Earth 1. Will they use that knowledge for a better society, or will they disregard it and be condemned to repeat the mistakes of their ancestors?

The Terrians: are the personification of natural forces on the new planet. They not only live within the planet, but travel through it like blood in the veins of a body. They not only live in concert with Earth 2, but they actually are part of the living biology of the planet. We have seen in several episodes how the Terrians have been harmed by the colonists but never respond with hate or spite. They represent the frailty of the environment and the strength of nature.

Ulysses Adair: Ulysses, also known as Odysseus, travelled the ancient seas and won the Trojan war. So what's the connection with little Uly? When Ulysses fought the Trojans, he and his army hid inside a giant wooden horse which they erected outside the gates of Troy. His purpose, of course, was to get the Trojans to take the horse inside the city, so that Ulysses and his men would then be able to attack the Trojans. Well, you may think I'm stretching a bit here, but little Uly has a secret inside him. That secret was put there by the Terrians when they cured him of the illness he suffered from on the stations. And like Ulysses of old, he has been able to get past the wall of silence that bars the colonists from the Terrians. He represents a new form of man which will have learned to exist as part of his natural world, instead of trying to control it.
